WASHINGTON, May 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a senior official of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is heading to New York for talks about a possible meeting between U.S. and DPRK leaders.

Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, is "heading now to New York."

Trump misspelt Kim's name as "Kim Young Chol" in his tweet announcing the visit.

"We have put a great team together for our talks" with DPRK, said Trump. "Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit," the U.S. president added.

Trump on Sunday confirmed that a U.S. official team had arrived in the DPRK to talk about the preparation for talks between the DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un and himself, which was originally scheduled on June 12 in Singapore.

Trump also trumpeted in his tweet that Kim's trip to New York a new sign of progress for the leaders' meeting, was "solid response" to his letter.

He referred to a letter he wrote to Kim, released by the White House on Thursday, in which Trump canceled the scheduled meeting, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility" displayed by Pyongyang recently.

However, Trump reversed course on Friday, saying both sides wanted the meeting to happen and it could still go ahead after productive talks.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday confirmed the willingness of Kim and Trump to hold the first-ever historic DPRK-U.S. leaders' meeting as scheduled.
