ARUSHA, Tanzania, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police are looking for a man alleged to have run over two Zebras and killed them on the spot along Arusha-Nairobi highway, authorities said on Sunday.

Peter Kubingwa, Longido District wildlife officer said the incident occurred on Saturday morning in Namanga area, a few kilometers away from the Tanzania-Kenya border post.

Kubingwa said that the driver was identified as Deogratius Beatus Loya, a resident of Arusha, who abandoned the car he was driving after knocking down the animals.

Kubingwa accused the wanted driver of running and abandoning his vehicle when the incident occurred. He appealed to the drivers using the busy highway to be extra cautious when passing through the animal corridors, urging them to pay attention to the road signs erected along the road.

Highways passing through national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and wildlife corridors are reported to have an adverse impact on wild animals.

Between 2011 and 2015, a total 956 wild animals in Mikumi National Park died due to road killings within the park.
