MOSCOW, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Russia is developing the Kalibr-M cruise missile with a range of over 4,500 km, which is able to carry a conventional or a nuclear warhead, TASS news agency reported Tuesday.

The new missile, an upgraded version of the Kalibr cruise missile in service, will be mounted on large surface ships and nuclear submarines by 2027, TASS quoted a source in the military industry as saying.

The Defense Ministry has financed the creation of the missile, which will have a larger warhead with a weight of nearly one ton and is designed to destroy land targets.

The current Kalibr missile has a range of about 2,000 km and can fly at a subsonic speed. The Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea has used these missiles to strike Islamic State terrorists in Syria.
