BARCELONA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Argentina attacking midfielder Manuel Lanzini will miss the World Cup in Russia after suffering a knee injury while training with the national team here on Friday.
The 25-year-old West Ham player ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament during a closed-door session at the Joan Gamper sports complex in Barcelona.
"He is currently immobilized and undergoing standard treatment for this type of injury," Argentina team doctor Daniel Martinez said in a video posted on the Argentine Football Association website.
"We are coordinating with Manuel and his club to decide which steps to take in regards to where and when the surgery will take place," he added.
Lanzini, capped three times for Argentina, was expected to be a starter in the Albiceleste's opening World Cup match against Iceland on June 16.
Two-time World Cup winners Argentina will also face Croatia and Nigeria in the tournament's group stage.
