TOKYO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday in choppy trade as investor sentiment was bolstered by solid Chinese shares despite the U.S. Nasdaq Composite Index's retreat late last week setting a weak tone early on.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 82.74 points, or 0.37 percent, from Friday to close the day at 22,614.82.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 2.46 points, or 0.15 percent, to finish at 1,695.31.
Mining, food, and farm and fishery-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
