PORT MORESBY, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Port Moresby, capital and the largest city of Papua New Guinea (PNG), has been hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Week on Nov. 12-18.
PNG lies in the South Pacific, outside of Australia and New Zealand, and the capital city is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua with an estimated population of 500,000.
PNG gained full independence from Australia and became an independent country with Port Moresby as its capital city in September 1975.
Port Moresby has a tropical savanna climate, with relatively constant temperatures throughout the year. Port Moresby's average yearly rainfall is just over 1,000 mm, making it one of the driest place in the country.
The capital city is served by Jackson's International Airport, the biggest international airport of the Pacific island nation.
