BERLIN, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The construction of about 100 kilometers of gas pipelines on German territory for the Nord Stream 2 project was completed, Steffen Ebert, German press spokesman of Nord Stream 2, said on Friday.
From the end of 2019 onwards, the pipeline Nord Stream 2 is scheduled to deliver Russian gas to the city of Lubmin in northern Germany. According to Gazprom, the pipelines Nord Stream 2 and Nord Stream, which was already completed in 2011, will transport up to 110 billion cubic meters of gas per year to Germany,
Several European countries as well as the United States have criticized Nord Stream 2. "We have not yet used all the instruments that could seriously undermine or stop the project," Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the EU, said in Brussels last Tuesday.
Germany is in the process of gradually fading out the generation of electricity from coal and Chancellor Merkel emphasized in a speech to the European Parliament that Germany needed Russian gas for the time being.
This would especially apply "in a country like Germany which will no longer have any nuclear energy in a few years," added Merkel.
