SANTIAGO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Canada and Cuba staged upsets in the quarterfinal round of the Women's Team table tennis event at the 2018 ITTF Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile on Wednesday.
Canada, the 11th seeds, defeated 4th seeds Puerto Rico 3-1 while Cuba, seeded eighth, edged Chile, the third seeds 3-2.
In other quarterfinals, top seeds Brazil, spearheaded by Gui Lin, Bruna Takahashi and Jessica Yamada beat 10th seeds the Dominican Republic trio of Eva Brito, Esmerlyn Castro and Yasiris Ortiz by three matches to nil.
Second seeds the United States fielded Wang Xinyue, Wu Yue and Lily Zhang to eliminated sixth seeds Argentina's Camila Arguelles, Ana Codina and Agustina Iwasa 3-1.
Brazil, Canada, Cuba and the United States have now sealed places in the 2019 Pan American Games to be staged in Lima, Peru.
At the semifinal stage in Santiago, Brazil meet Canada and Cuba take on the United States. The Women's Team event will be played to a conclusion on Thursday.
