KABUL, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan National Police have arrested a key local Taliban leader in the country's western province of Herat, Afghan Ministry of Interior Affairs said Friday.
"An overnight police special operation resulted in the arrest of a key Taliban terrorist member named Jalil known as Jalil Tufan in Pashton Zarghon district, Herat province," the ministry said in a statement.
The arrested militant had been involved in a series of terrorist activities and direct attacks against Afghan security forces in the province, 640 km west of Kabul.
A pistol and a telecommunication radio device have also been seized from the arrested militant during the operation.
Afghan security forces have increased ground and air offensives against militants within the past a few months as the Taliban militant group has been attempting to take territory and consolidate its positions.
The Taliban militant group has not still commented on the report.
