UNITED NATIONS, June 18 (Xinhua) -- UN peacekeeping operations must adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of peacekeeping operations, said a Chinese envoy on Tuesday.
The sovereignty and leadership of host countries must be respected, said Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations.
Attention must be given to communication with host countries and relevant parties so as to win their trust at all stages of deployment, Wu told the Security Council.
Relevant issues must be addressed through timely consultations, he said.
It is necessary to assist host countries in building and improving their national institutions and enhance their "blood-generation capacity," he said.
Peacekeeping operations are an important means of maintaining international peace and security, he noted.
"They play an irreplaceable role in helping stabilize the situation in host countries and strengthening their security capacity. They also help create favorable conditions for political settlement," Wu said.
