LAUSANNE, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The International Olympic Committee has stripped Olympic status from troubled boxing body AIBA and decided to hold the boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020 without AIBA involvement during its session here on Wednesday.
Boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904. At the Tokyo Games 286 boxers will compete across eight categories for men and five for women.
A task force from the IOC will be in charge of the delivery of qualification events and the boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020.
The IOC has taken a tough line with AIBA as the organization is in controversial situation regarding governance, financial management and sporting integrity. But the IOC aims to keep athletes at the heart of the Olympic Games, protecting their right to compete.
