MUMBAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nine people died including seven women, one infant and one man and 16 were missing after a rescue boat capsized in Sangli district of India's western state of Maharashtra on Thursday.
Locals were using the rescue boat to carry around 30 persons from flood affected areas to safer place when it overturned, said a local police official.
The state has been facing heavy rainfall over the past week that led to floods and evacuation of over 140,000 people.
In the past week, 16 deaths were reported in various incidents of floods and National Disaster Response Force along with army and navy personnel were deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations in the flood affected areas.
India Meteorological Department has issued "extremely heavy rain" warning for three districts of Pune, Satara and Kolhapur of western Maharashtra on Thursday.
